Abbas Kaijuka Brings First Solo Kai's Divo Showcase to Uganda at Miss Universe Sashing Ceremony

Kampala's fashion scene witnessed a landmark moment on Sunday as celebrated designer Abbas Kaijuka staged the first solo showcase of his Kai's Divo Collection on Ugandan soil during the Miss Universe Uganda 2026 Sashing Ceremony. The event also saw 15 delegates officially sashed, advancing to the next stage of the national pageant.

For a designer whose work has graced some of East Africa's biggest fashion platforms, including Kampala Fashion Week and Swahili Fashion Week, the showcase marked a full-circle moment. After years of presenting his creations on regional and international stages, Kaijuka finally unveiled a solo runway presentation before a home audience.

Rather than presenting a single collection, Kaijuka used the runway to showcase three distinct collections, each with its own aesthetic and emotional narrative.

The opening collection explored themes of transcendence through a palette of white and gold, designed to evoke serenity and a dreamlike atmosphere.

"It was more angelic," Kaijuka said. "That softness that you feel like in a dream."

Flowing silhouettes and soft tones created an ethereal mood before the showcase transitioned into a strikingly different second act.

The next collection embraced black as its dominant colour, symbolising strength, confidence and liberation.

"Black is powerful. Black is about freedom," Kaijuka said, explaining that the collection reflected his long-held belief that fashion is ultimately an expression of freedom.

The final chapter was the evening's most diverse, featuring several distinct segments within a single collection.

It opened with vibrant red garments symbolising love before transitioning into green pieces inspired by nature. The collection then introduced hand-painted designs, with each garment treated as an artistic canvas to create unique, painterly finishes.

The showcase concluded this section with a combination of polka dots and stripes, an unconventional pairing Kaijuka deliberately chose to challenge traditional design norms.

"No one thinks of doing a collection of polka dots and stripes," he said.

The finale featured one of Kaijuka's most personal creations—a leather collection incorporating custom-made fabric printed with Vogue magazine cover artwork.

The designer revealed that the textile was produced several years ago during his participation in Kampala Fashion Week. He personally selected the magazine cover prints and oversaw the manufacturing process, combining them with leather-print detailing to create a fabric intended to celebrate fashion itself.

Having preserved the material as part of his archive for years, Sunday night's showcase provided an opportunity to reintroduce it to a new audience.

The showcase formed part of the Miss Universe Uganda 2026 Sashing Ceremony, during which 15 finalists were officially unveiled and presented with their sashes ahead of the competition's grand finale.

The evening brought together fashion, entertainment and pageantry, attracting several prominent figures from Kampala's creative industry while celebrating two significant milestones—the advancement of the pageant contestants and Kaijuka's first solo runway presentation in Uganda.

For the Kai's Divo Collection, however, the defining moment was the designer's long-awaited homecoming. After years of building his reputation on regional and international runways, Abbas Kaijuka finally staged a solo showcase before a Ugandan audience, marking a significant milestone in his fashion career.
